Leynie Lugtu, Senior Theatre Sister Trauma and Orthopaedic Ashford and St. Peter’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded a OneTogether Small Steps Award, 2018, for a project which established a quality improvement programme in surgery at Ashford and St Peters NHS Hospital Trust.
A multidisciplinary team was developed with the aim of reducing infection rates. Following an extensive review of the whole patient journey changes in practice were made and a reduction in SSI rates has been achieved. Bringing the team together to agree consistency in approach to care was crucial to this result.
Helen Richards, Matron and Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Team at St Richards Hospital Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Chichester was awarded a OneTogether Small Steps Award, 2018, for a project which established a quality improvement programme in orthopaedic surgery.
The Trusts Philosophy is 'Patient First' and in January 2018, Helen was appointed to take the lead on the introduction of practice based on the One-Together programme. This ensured that the evidence-based Quality Standards were being undertaken throughout the patients journey pre, peri and post-operatively.
Workshops took place with representation from the operating theatres, surgical nurses, surgeons, clinical director, surgical managers, anaesthetists, purchasing, estates, facilities, decontamination, pharmacy, procurement and IP&C.
Key to improvement was acknowledging that not one thing matters but a multitude of actions contributes to reducing risk of infection, when applied consistently and appropriately.
Kelly Baptiste was awarded a OneTogether Small Steps award in 2018.
Kelly introduced the orthopaedic surgical speciality, an audit tool and schedule of assessment of proactive, utilising the OneTogether assessment tools.
A working group involving the multi-disciplinary team was established. Action plans and strategies were formulated to ensure the risk of surgical site infection is reduced. This approach led to an improved learning culture with increased education about SSI reduction practice for existing staff and new starters. Timely communication of surgical site rates has been achieved with a closer working relationship between theatre and infection prevention teams.
Kelly has seen consistency of care for patients improve and has received feedback that prior to this staff didn’t realise the impact small actions can have on patient outcomes.
